I took a lozenge on Tuesday. I think it had the placebo effect because my tonsils are no longer swollen. But if I think there’s a placebo effect, is it still a placebo effect?)

As Schmitz has already blogged, there was an honors assembly this week. For some of us, that means free t-shirts. For the vast majority, that means shortened periods interrupted by 59 minutes of shushing while crowded like cattle onto pathetically cramped 9-inch wide plastic bleacher seats sharing air with 2000 other people.

But I was among the elite cattle seated on folding chairs in the middle of the gym. We were the 70+ member club who scored more than 30 on the ACT. In addition I was being doubly honored for being one of seven seniors who is an AP Scholar with Distinction, a result of three years of hard work and $415 in test fees. But since both are academic achievements, I only get the ACT shirt. Now, if I had done a sport and gotten higher than a 30 on the ACT, I would get the ACT shirt and a green or blue Hersey honors shirt. In lieu of fuming about it, I “modded” my shirt to suit my circumstances.

I did something in AP Physics today, something of which I’d rather not have photos circulated. Of course, Schmitz already has. Okay, I’ll come clean. Our roller coaster was called The Century because it reached approximately 100 mph. In order to secure some “bravery points” and possible extra credit, my three-person group dressed as figures from from the past Century. Chris was a modern-day baseball player, Brad was a fifties’ greaser, I was “Charlie Chaplin” (or at least a composite of anybody from the first third of the century in a black suit and top hat). I sat unnoticed at my seat in a suit until I put on the hat, then something clicked for the audience and they wouldn’t stop laughing. It got worse when threatened everybody by shaking my cane at them.

The suit was mine. The top hat and cane were Brad’s. He also said he had a cape, but I thought that that would be going too far. Why? It’s synergy.

top hat + cane

= turn of the century businessman

top hat + cape

= late 19th century Londoner

top hat + cane + cape

= magician

Brad is one of those people with a whole bunch of costumes in his basement. Last night, when we were brainstorming, he said he could come as a hippie, disco guy, Abe Lincoln, cowboy, clown. Apparently, Brad lives at the circus.

We had a Roller Coaster Tycoon scale model built to simulate our coaster. That’s why I had brought my laptop. We installed RCT in the minutes before class started and brought the save file over. I then closed the lid on it as the others gave their presentations. Then it was our turn. After I had enumerated the reasons that the Deja Vu should be removed and replaced with this ride, I opened the lid of my laptop and found that the virtual ride had broken down. I had let it run for several virtual weeks while the lid was closed. Irony, huh?

It was a interesting day overall.
