You can research any phone by Googling, “[Phone model] sucks!”. So when it came time for me to upgrade my handset, I set back to research. I continue to be irritated by some of AT&T’s practices. There’s the branding for one. And the demands they place upon the manufacturers to modify some of their phones.
The Nokia 6650 was a good phone though. Sure the back was just a thin slab of aluminum, but the front was outfitted with a polished faceplate of adamantium. Didn’t scratch, didn’t scuff, and didn’t fall off. It had a smartphone operating system that could track my appointments, multi-task and let me listen to music if I wanted to. Hell, it even played South Park videos I downloaded to it.
I was going to tell people I got a touch screen phone so I can blame autocorrect, when… I text… certain things. But I decided against it because people would think I got an iPhone. Also, that takes the sport out of it.
I researched a couple hours a day for 10 days. It came down to an LG Neon II vs the Samsung Evergreen. I ended up going with the Evergreen due to past experiences with other LG phones’ GUIs. Seemed so cumbersome.
I soon learned that Samsung’s interfaces can be just as cumbersome. Furthermore, the design team apparently does not place high priority on QC. The messaging application counted down my characters from 450 instead of 160 for some reason. But wait. This phone was made to be friendlier to the environment and had a nature theme to match! So…
It has jungle noises for ring tones. I’m sure there’s a Bengal tiger somewhere that’s grateful. Maybe there’s another phone out there for me…
A QWERTY keyboard and a Symbian S60 operating system. Yeah, that’s exactly what I need.
